BACKGROUND: Cryptococcal meningitis is one of the most common opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. Mostly it manifests as subacute/chronic meningitis, although pathological findings suggest extensive tissue invasion brain parenchyma and meninges. This disease has a very high mortality rate, even with administration an antifungal combination. CASE REPORT: Male, 53 years old, clinical symptoms headache, was experienced by patient from 1 month before admission worsening within week. The headache describe throbbing throughout head, severe intensity, does not go away pain medications. frequency headaches persistent A history weight loss found, about 10 kg 3 months. free sex found. History HIV known since day to hospital undergone antiretroviral treatment. diagnosed cryptococcal on basis finding yeas t-like cells Indian ink test, also stage IV decreased CD4 count. patients treated tapering off dexamethasone injection, 1× 960 mg Cotrimoxazole, 400 mg/24 h injection fluconazole, × folic acid, received fixed dose combination antiretrovirals therapy. CONCLUSION: caused fungi its incidence increases increase diseases associated immune system disorders such HIV.
